This is a precious red leather diary and an important item in the Lin family's collection. During the War of Resistance Against Japan (approximately 1938–1943), Lin Yutang recorded in this book some significant publications related to his family history and donations for national salvation, referring to them as his "Golden Books." This is the treasured Golden Book of Yutang.
This diary is filled with rich details, including over 120 pages of handwritten English entries. It serves as a summary and record of Lin’s life from 1938 to 1943 and even his earlier years. It encompasses numerous daily observations and is truly delightful to read. It is evident that this diary was Lin Yutang’s “handy companion” for more than five years.
The project “Important Manuscripts of Lin Yutang’s Life,” filmed in Xiling, centers on this Golden Book and includes Lin Yutang’s self-portrait, signed photographs, and family letters, using Lin’s own phrases—“My Book,” “My Country,” and “My Family”—to portray the essence of “Myself.” These materials are exceedingly precious and worthy of careful reading.
Lin Yutang was among the few writers who could earn a living solely through writing, earning him the nickname “Royal Relative.” Within the pages of this Golden Book, entries related to “My Book” chronologically document the drafting processes of four major bestsellers: “My Country and My People,” “The Importance of Living,” “Moment in Peking,” and “The Wisdom of Confucius.” These records hold significant reference value for understanding the distribution of Lin’s works and his financial circumstances.
