Rosenthal developed a strong passion for art from a young age. He initially studied painting with the Mexican artist Fortunato Arriola. Later, Rosenthal’s parents used money saved from his small business to send him to the renowned Royal Academy of Art in Munich.

Rosenthal created many traditional and familial realist scenes filled with romanticism. This “Eileen” is visually striking and may have been influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites. The “Pre-Raphaelites” were a group of British artists, including prominent figures such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt. They were drawn to themes from medieval literature and placed great emphasis on naturalistic detail. Their works tended toward luxurious and romantic symbolism, thereby highlighting the fantastical nature of their subjects.

Another significant influence on Rosenthal’s work was the Victorian poet Lord Tennyson.
