The Elaine in the painting is not an American superstar. Her story originates from the medieval legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, but this painting is not a beautiful and eternal tale. Elaine died of sorrow after failing to receive a response to her love from Sir Lancelot (a legendary figure among the Knights of the Round Table led by King Arthur). A stern ferryman transported her body to Camelot (the location of King Arthur’s court). Elaine clutches Lancelot’s love letter tightly against her chest with one hand, while holding a lily in the other.
