As shown above, when Wang Anshi altered Wang Ji’s line, he indeed employed earlier imagery. In its specific manifestation, he adopted the artistic method of “personifying objects.” Although directly copying and transforming it into the original might easily invite ridicule from storks and be suspected of lacking imagination, the poet, in his imitation, could elegantly integrate it into his own imagery system, expressing it through symbols and metaphors distinct from the original poem’s objective realism, thereby endowing this traditional imagery with a shared subjective emotion that truly reflects the poet’s individual spiritual experience under a specific political context. This approach remains quite commendable for learning from and drawing inspiration from one’s predecessors, and it is unlikely to stem merely from a “competitive” disposition.
