Helen, the same scene was also frequently depicted by painters, reflecting Guan Liang's fondness for it and his confidence in its composition and color scheme. Now, this oil painting, auctioned by Xiling Seal Society in autumn 2021, has acquired its own uniqueness. That year, it was Guan Liang's favorite painting, hung in his home for many years, making it exceedingly precious.
At the age of 17, Guan Liang traveled abroad to Japan with his older brother, determined to study the "useless" art of painting rather than the then-popular field of chemistry. His father understood him and offered unconditional support. It was precisely because of such a father that Guan Liang became such a father himself; this non-interference and artistic immersion bestowed upon his children the finest form of love.
Guan Liang belonged to China's first generation of renowned oil painters. Alongside Lin Fengmian, Xu Beihong, and Liu Haisu, he was regarded as one of the "Four Great Masters of Early Chinese Oil Painting," making tremendous contributions to the development of Chinese oil painting and holding a significant position in Chinese oil painting history.
His oil paintings were influenced by modernism not only in technical form but also in theory and concept. He said: "If we understand the theories and spirit of modern painting, we will never misunderstand or criticize the modern art of that era. A painter must receive adequate education, especially today; otherwise, he is merely a craftsman."
Due to the scarcity of materials and meager salaries during the Northern Expedition and the War of Resistance against Japan, Guan Liang could not afford oil paints or canvases, so he picked up brushes and Xuan paper, using simple tools to explore a new artistic path. Yet his affection for oil painting remained evident. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Guan Liang resumed oil painting. These works, witnessing the rebirth of his oil painting career, survived the hardships and are few in number; they have now been over a year since their creation.
