Thus, this chapter features a refined design with rich and colorful patterns, embodying the characteristics of Eastern and Western court art, evoking an artistic impression of “magnificent splendor and dazzling brilliance,” possessing high artistic value and even reaching the level of national ceremonial significance. Intangible cultural heritage is not only a display of history and a transmission of cultural sentiment, but also an effective inheritance through practical application embodied in this medal—this is one of the special significances of this chapter.
In addition, it employs China’s local gold-plating technique for coin minting, which presents extremely high manufacturing difficulty, with a scrap rate exceeding 20%. Each gold and silver medal represents a rigorous test of the fate of precious metal materials, presenting immense challenges. Due to differences in metal materials, the processing techniques for the inner and outer rings vary. The relief carving on the surface of the silver core exhibits pronounced undulations, rendering the panda imagery realistic, rich, and three-dimensional; meanwhile, the gilded outer rim displays a simplified line-drawing depiction of the panda, enhancing its artistic appeal and creating a striking contrast in artistic effect.
It can be said that the “40th Anniversary of the Issuance of Chinese Panda Gold Coins” represents a novel attempt in the history of Chinese commemorative medal design, integrating professional technologies such as artistry, craftsmanship, engraving, inlay, and metal smelting. It possesses distinct ethnic style and profound historical depth, standing as a national treasure-level work of art. Employing silk-screen engraving, enamel coloring, and localized gold-plating techniques, from design and mold-making to wire-inlay, enamel application, and gold plating, countless process steps and coordinated efforts by numerous technicians were required, with the minting team dedicating countless sleepless nights. When we admire and handle this medal, we can more directly perceive it as an artistic masterpiece凝聚 of traditional Chinese culture and the vital spirit of artists.
