Since the reform and opening up, the state has placed great emphasis on education as a strategic priority, and calligraphy education has achieved significant results.

In the realm of basic education, during the 1980s, primary and secondary schools introduced writing courses centered on brush pen tracing, copying models, and hard-pen regular script practice. With the deepening of exam-oriented education, calligraphy education in basic education virtually stagnated over the following two decades after 1990. However, it is encouraging that in 2011, the state renewed its emphasis on calligraphy education; the Ministry of Education issued the "Opinions on Calligraphy Education in Primary and Secondary Schools," and in early 2013, released the "Guidelines for Calligraphy Education in Primary and Secondary Schools," integrating calligraphy education into the teaching system of primary and secondary schools, with phased learning of hard-pen and soft-pen calligraphy according to age groups. The inclusion of calligraphy courses with statutory class hours in the primary and secondary school curriculum system marked a milestone decision and received high praise from students and parents alike.

Higher calligraphy education, accompanying the pace of reform and opening up, has undergone a transformation from inception to maturity. In 1979, Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts admitted its first master's student in calligraphy, after which calligraphy education at the undergraduate and master's levels rapidly expanded nationwide. In 1993, Capital Normal University became the first institution in the country to gain authorization to award doctoral degrees in calligraphy. In 1998, the discipline established a postdoctoral research station in calligraphy, completing a comprehensive and advanced calligraphy education system spanning from associate to postdoctoral levels, ushering in a new chapter in higher calligraphy education after reform and opening up. In 2011, with art elevated to the level of a discipline category, calligraphy became a specialized secondary discipline under the first-level discipline of art. Higher calligraphy education evolved from nothing to existence, and ultimately attained independent disciplinary status, achieving a qualitative leap in educational methodology. To date, more than 200 universities across the country have established calligraphy majors, cultivating a large number of talents in creation, research, and education for society at large.
