Personal Profile
You Xi, also known as You Xihong, was born on April 1, 1978, at the foot of the Maiji Grottoes in Tianshui, Gansu. He graduated from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in 2002. He is currently a council member of the Gansu Artists Association, a painter at the Tianjin Tanggu Art Academy, a contracted artist of Rongbaozhai, a member of the China Artists Association, and director of the Maiji Art Academy, a full-time painter.
His painting style is grand and bold, with ancient yet vibrant coloration—lively but never vulgar, rich and vigorous, ink saturated and moist, deeply inspired by the Shanghai school style of Wu Changshuo.
One of the most promising artists in terms of appreciation potential today, his works have been auctioned by multiple auction houses; he is a key contracted artist of five major galleries and a prime original stock for contemporary collectors. He has mastered the essence of Wu Changshuo’s苍润金石 (dry, moist, and metallic) style, making him one of the standout painters worthy of collection in today’s art world. He excels in painting the Wu-school “Sui Chao Qing Gong” compositions. A National First-Class Artist, his work “Home in Longyuan” was exhibited in the “China-Japan-Korea Ink Painting Exchange Exhibition”; his work “Maiji Mist and Rain” was included in the “Pilgrimage to Dunhuang Exhibition,” hosted by the China Artists Association; his work “The Place Haunting My Dreams” was featured in the “Century of Bin Hong Exhibition”; his work “Scenic View of Longshan” was included in the “Meeting at Pujiang Exhibition.” His large freehand ink-and-wash four-panel bird-and-flower screens are permanently collected by the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall. His work “Maiji Mountain Mist and Clouds” is permanently collected by the Olympic Organizing Committee. He has published “Collection of Paintings by You Xihong” and “Poetry Collection by You Xihong.”
