Sui Yan, original name Hong Xiaoguang, also known as the master of Weiyin Pavilion, is from Zhangzhou, Fujian. He is currently the director of the Sui Yan Art Museum in Tokyo, Japan, director of the Institute of World Folk Culture at Renmin University of China, advisor to the Beijing Folklore Museum, vice chairman of the Beijing Shijingshan District Artists Association, and a national first-class artist.Sui Yan has been painting since childhood and specializes in traditional ink figures combined with Western artistic techniques, creating a modernist style of figure painting. His works are lifelike, vivid, and grounded in profound traditional brushwork skills, making him one of the leading contemporary middle-generation painters active on Beijing’s art scene. Sui Yan is especially renowned for his depictions of "Zhong Kui." Zhong Kui, though possessing an unusual appearance—with a leopard-like head, round eyes, and a bristling beard—is a man of extraordinary talent and deep learning, embodying righteousness and unwavering integrity. In traditional Chinese culture, Zhong Kui is revered as the "Holy Lord Who Bestows Blessings and Protects the Home." Sui Yan has created over sixty distinct portrayals of Zhong Kui, each with a unique expression; his Zhong Kui figures radiate individuality and vitality, rendered with remarkable expressiveness and widely admired. Sui Yan’s design of Zhong Kui-themed T-shirts has also become a personal signature for some individuals. Sui Yan has become symbolically identified with Zhong Kui.Sui Yan has dedicated over thirty years to his artistic career. Since 2012, he has held multiple solo exhibitions in Beijing. His works such as “The Curtain Falls,” “Expectation,” and “First Taste of the Forbidden Fruit” have been exhibited in Japan, Taiwan, the United States, and other regions, and are collected by renowned museums and collectors both domestically and internationally. Sui Yan has long devoted himself to exploring and researching Chinese figure painting, boldly innovating while maintaining realism and emphasizing poetic atmosphere. His works overflow with heartfelt affection for nature and real-life existence, revealing a noble grandeur and authentic emotion beyond ordinary reach, earning widespread acclaim from friends both at home and abroad.
